The Importance of Understanding This Moment

On January 6th 2021, steadfast followers of President Donald Trump, stormed down Pennsylvania Ave in Washington DC and vandalized the White House. This is exactly as it sounds. An act of domestic terrorism. This act is one that will forever be in the history of this country. This is the first time since 1814 that the Capitol has been breached, and it was not done by “foreign” threats that the government seems to consistently allude to, but it was done by homegrown domestic terrorists who have been conditioned to believe that no matter the cost and who suffers they must get what they want.

The one question lingers in the air after an event like this. How does this affect our community? These supporters don’t represent the communities that consist of BIPOC and LGBTQIA+ and TGNC folks. There are those who have been left jobless by a pandemic, their loved ones have been lost, and there still will be police brutality and violence against their bodies. Why should we care and why should we even take notice?

We should take notice because if we ignore it for “more important things”, our voices will be drowned out by those who seek to silence it. It is all connected. These systems of oppression that hold our people behind bars, are upheld by the very people who would shoot them down in cold blood if they even looked at the Capitol building. We need to understand the differences between the response to the Black Lives Matter marches, where there was a gate built up and tear gas used. During these protests there were hundreds of arrests, but during the storming and insurgence of the nation’s capitol by white nationalists they are pressed to only find fifty.

We need to know these things so we can find ways to reverse these systems. We can’t have our own revolution and truths without understanding the nuance and truth of the system which presses down on our entire being. With this knowledge we may scream, cry, educate, and grow. But in the end we can work to end it and see what systems have holes where we can strategically rip open the curtain of American exceptionalism into a brighter future for the youth of today.

I showed the youth I work with this footage. I showed them videos of these folks making it further into the White House than they ever would get on a regular day. I showed them this, and they were livid. They were enraged. They had long discussions about it and broke down how the government let this happen on their own watch. They knew all the nuances of it already. They saw the importance of understanding the danger of white supremacy attempting a coup upon itself. They were demanding change. It was inspiring to hear. The youth are ready. Are we?

A deep feeling, oversharing, storytelling, kid from Oakland running around believing in fairy tales.
